
The Governor
For most of my life I was running two systems at once. My full mind, and the governor that kept it in check.

On the synthesiser's shame, translation, and the talent that doesn't look like one.

Lisa Carrington on the water — force and stillness in the same stroke. Taylor Swift, ninety-six thousand in Melbourne singing every word she wrote. Dame Kiri, one voice, no microphone, carrying over a full orchestra to the back row of the house. Ed Sheeran — voice, guitar, beatbox — a symphony of sounds in one person.
Their genius is visible. You can point at it, hear it, experience it. You can watch it from the stands and know, without anyone explaining, that you are watching someone exceptional.
There is another kind of talent. It doesn't look like one.
Primary school. A maths test, or a comprehension exercise, or one of those problems they give you with the careful scaffolding — first do this, then show this, then write your answer here.
You skipped the scaffolding. Wrote the answer. The right answer. And they marked it wrong. Not because it was incorrect. Because there was no working. No neat trail of breadcrumbs from question to conclusion. Just the gap — the blank space where the process should have been — and then the answer, sitting there, correct and inexplicable and therefore suspicious.
Show. Your. Working.
But how do you show something you couldn't see yourself doing? How do you explain, at seven or eight or nine, that you did work it out — somewhere too fast to watch? That the answer arrived whole, the way a face arrives when you recognise someone. You don't build a face from its parts. You don't think: nose, then eyes, then mouth, therefore — Mrs Patterson. You just see. You just know. The seeing was never the absence of working. It was working at a speed that leaves no trail. And they wanted the nose, the eyes, the mouth. They wanted the journey. You only had the destination. So you learned, very early, that being right was not enough. That knowing was not enough. That if you could not perform the process of arriving at the answer, the answer itself was worthless. And something inside you understood — with the blunt, wordless logic of a child — that your way of thinking was broken. Or at least unwelcome.
That was the first burial.
There is a particular kind of shame that belongs to the synthesiser. It sits quiet and low in the chest, and it activates every time someone asks the question you've learned to dread. "But what's your original contribution?" You learned early. Shark-toothed teachers drawing hard lines between "your" work and "their" work. Gold stars for originality. Red ink for resemblance.
The message was clear before you had language for it. The highest virtue is to pull something from nothing, and anything else is theft. There was one sanctioned alternative — quote directly, reference accordingly, bibliography at the back. But what about when the knowing is embodied? When you have no idea where it came from, because you just linked something you read a year ago with the gap from a conversation a week ago and now, now it is simply your own mind? There is no footnote for how you think. A knowing without a bibliography was treated as either genius or theft. And nobody guessed genius.
What you actually do is this. You read about termite mounds and see ventilation systems. You listen to a jazz musician describe comping and suddenly understand how to manage a difficult conversation. You watch a surgeon's hands on a documentary and realise something about the way your team handles crisis — the calm triage, the economy of motion, the way panic is a luxury no one can afford. Your mind is a loom. Other people spin the thread. You weave. And for most of your life, you thought the loom was cheating.
The mythology of the lone genius is so deep in the culture that it functions like gravity — invisible, omnipresent, warping everything toward a single point. Newton under the apple tree. Einstein at the patent office. The inventor in the garage. Always singular. Always conjuring fire from the void. Nobody tells you that Newton read everything. That Einstein argued with everyone. That the garage was full of borrowed parts. Nobody tells you that the void was always crowded.
Here is what copying actually looks like — reproducing something without transformation. Taking the shape and leaving it unchanged. It is photocopying. It is plagiarism. It is a thing you have almost never done. Here is what you do. You take a shape from one world, carry it across a border, and discover what it means on the other side. Sometimes the meaning is new there. And sometimes the border has been running a distorted copy all along — integrity worn as a moral judgement, when it was always an engineering question. Can this carry what it is asked to hold? Then you are not importing a foreign idea. You are returning the accurate one. The shape is the same. The context does all the work. This is not copying. This is translation. And translation is arguably one of the most creative acts there is, because it requires you to understand something so deeply that you can rebuild it in a language it was never meant to speak.
You were never reading the words. You were reading the terrain underneath them. And terrain belongs to no one. Words can be stolen. Terrain can only be travelled, mapped and marked.
And every time you did it — every time you named the pattern, framed the problem, and built the answer — someone said no. Nice logic, but not this time. Too risky. I don't get it. Nope. Not how it works. Even though it does work like that. You could see the whole architecture. You could see where the load was falling wrong and where the fix already existed in another discipline, another industry, held in another conversation. You had it. You had it. And they said no. Sometimes you were wrong. But often the problem was stranger. You could see the architecture, and you couldn't make the path visible enough for anyone else to follow. So you stopped going there. You learned to pre-reject yourself. To run every insight through a filter. Will they get it? Will they accept it? Is it worth the fight? And the answer, more and more often, was no. So the insight died in your throat. And you carried it instead.
It composites. Layer after layer of suppressed capability compacting into something dense and heavy that you carry everywhere without naming.
We talk about the shadow as the place where we hide what disgusts us. The rage. The jealousy. The petty, feral, unkind parts. Jung's basement full of monsters. But there is another shadow — quieter, stranger, more tragic. The shadow where we exile our gifts. Not because they are dark but because they have never been safe. The parts of yourself that others might call extraordinary, that you have banished because every time they surfaced, the world flinched.
The rapid pattern recognition that people called jumping to conclusions. The cross-domain thinking they called "unfocused". The intuitive leaps they called not rigorous enough. Each rejection a small burial. Each burial a lesson. This part of you is not welcome here. So you cast it outside. Not out because it was monstrous, but out because it was too much. Too fast. Too far ahead. Too hard to explain in the time you were given. And the shadow grew. Not with shame, exactly — with something worse. With waste.
The knowledge that you are carrying capacity you have never been allowed to use at scale. That there is a version of you that operates at full bandwidth, and you have met that version only in glimpses, only in private, only in the moments before you remembered to shut it down.
The cruellest part is the extra load. Because suppression is not neutral. It is not the absence of action. It is an action — constant, effortful, expensive. Every insight you swallow costs energy. Every pattern you see and don't name still runs in the background, unresolved, taking up processing power. You are running two systems at once. The full mind, and the governor that keeps it in check. And everyone around you sees someone who is capable but tired. Someone who is smart but somehow not producing at the level they should be. They don't see the governor. They don't see the tax. They see the output after suppression and judge it as the whole, never knowing that what they're looking at is what's left after you've already cut yourself in half.
I can write all of this in the second person because I lived every line of it in the first.
We were at the playground. She was three and a half. There was a boy — older, maybe six, trying to get across the monkey bars. He'd make it two rungs, three at most, then drop. Try again. Drop again. Getting frustrated, his face red, his movements becoming jerky with effort.
Madeleine watched for a while from the swings. Then she climbed down and walked over to him.
"You're trying too hard with your arms," she said.
The boy looked at her like she was speaking another language.
"Watch the big kids," she said, pointing to some eight-year-olds who were flowing across the bars like water. "They don't grab. They swing. Like when Daddy carries the washing basket — he doesn't lift it, he swings it."
I almost laughed. The washing basket? What did laundry have to do with monkey bars?
But then I watched. The big kids weren't muscling their way across. They were using momentum, their bodies swinging forward, each hand reaching for the next bar before the last one had taken their full weight. Like pendulums. Like carrying a washing basket, where you let the weight help you rather than fighting it.
The boy tried it. Made it four bars. Five. His whole face changed.
And I stood there, watching my three-year-old casually translate physics across domains — domestic knowledge solving a playground problem — something clicked.
That's what I do. That's what I've always done.
And watching her do it — out loud, unashamed, three years old and handing her sight to a stranger like it was nothing — I finally understood what nobody had told either of us. The loom is not lesser than the thread. The translator is not lesser than the author. The one who sees across boundaries is not cheating — they are doing something most people genuinely cannot do, and the reason it looks easy is that she is the one doing it. It's not that easy, they said. And they were right. For them.
The weight I had been carrying was never a flaw in my character. It was the cost of a world that taught me to hold myself back, to not believe what I could see — and a body that had been paying the bill ever since.
Digging it out took years. And here is the distinction it took me longest to see. The excavation and the talent are not the same thing. Anyone can learn to see themselves — the singer, the surgeon, the founder. The work is available to anyone willing to spend the effort and discipline excavating. And everyone who digs meets the same thing: the house they built, and what lies buried beneath it. What waits under the dirt is different for each of us. What was under mine was range — the same patterns visible in a marriage, a boardroom, a building, a team under siege. I believe everyone is capable of uncovering what I see. Most people see it in their own territory. Mine never learned where the borders were.
The seeing and the acting were never the problem. The answers arrived whole and most often they were right, the way they had since primary school. What I couldn't do was articulate my own cognition. No language. No simple sentence for a way of seeing this large. No way to hand the map to someone else. I had never seen the map myself.
The turn began in 2020, when I went looking for a way to understand my own thinking. A programme taught me to watch it — to track the defensive patterns and see the architecture producing them. Beneath the effect I was experiencing sat a core belief governing it. What it gave me wasn't the answer. It was the first landmarks on the map. And from there a question emerged. What if the thing you'd been calling the truth wasn't true at all?
And behind it, a stranger question lingered. What if the flaw was a glitch in the operating system, not the operating system itself? Who knew a person could have an operating system. That alone rearranged how I saw everything.
The debugging, I did myself. I never saw a glitch while I was running on it — but held up against the reality of a situation, I could see it straight away. One by one, the untruths came offline.
With the untruths offline, something was still running. The programme was built for the defensive patterns — the beliefs that protect. It had little more to say about what remained. The pattern recognition. The translation. The loom. The talent I had spent my life minimising was not a glitch in the operating system. It was the operating system. And nobody had ever mapped it — least of all me — because I had been too busy treating it as a fault to be managed. So the question turned one more time. Not what is wrong with how I think. Not why was I born with this brain. But — how does it work?
And I answered it the only way I have ever answered anything. I turned the loom on the loom.
Codifying what I could see was another matter. You cannot extract what you cannot see, and you cannot watch your own cognition when it runs faster than you can follow. I assumed I would need to slow my mind down to observe it. It was the opposite. I didn't need to slow my mind down — I needed to stop slowing it down for everyone else. When the governor fell away, so did the load it had been carrying. Without that weight, I was fast enough to watch my own thinking move — to hold the whole system in view and trace how I went from input to insight.
I had to become both the subject and the researcher. Six years it took me to see my own architecture.
From that work came the map I could finally hand to someone else.

A plan can show you every part of a house. It cannot show you the light, or the child who will run through it.
